Descendants of the Past, Ancestors of the Future is a dramatic short film about an expectant father who must deal with his family's past in order to face the future. This compelling and heartfelt film explores the sacrifices immigrant families make and the powerful bond that ties all generations of a family together—living, deceased, and yet to come.

Albert M. Chan

Albert M. Chan is a Chinese-Canadian filmmaker and actor based in the United States. Among his distinctions, he has been recognized by the National Film Board of Canada, is the recipient of a Puffin Foundation Grant, and was named a finalist for the prestigious Roy W. Dean Film Grant, awarded to films that are "unique and make a contribution to society...stories that can heal and enrich our lives."

Albert wrote, directed, and produced his first film, Fate Scores, which was recognized by the prestigious National Film Board of Canada. He directed and starred in his follow-up film, The Commitment, which screened at over 50 film festivals on six continents and won multiple awards, most notably edging out Oscar®-nominated Moonrise Kingdom to win a 2013 NASW Media Award. Albert's third film, Descendants of the Past, Ancestors of the Future, stars Golden Globe®, Emmy®, and Drama Desk nominee Tina Chen, and won Best Screenplay and Best Actress at the 2015 NYC Downtown Short Film Festival. His latest narrative film, Welcome to the World, was shot on an iPhone in one continuous 7-minute take for less than $140, and has so far screened in over 50 festivals on six continents. Albert also directed, edited, and produced the documentary MAP for Health: 25 Years of Asian Pride, about a group of young people who banded together to help the largely neglected Asian-Pacific Islander population during the AIDS crisis in the early 90's, which premiered at the 2018 Boston Asian American Film Festival.

Albert is currently developing science-based feature projects including the Black List Endorsed script Incarnations as a writer and The Elucidation of Dr. Park as a creative producer, the latter a collaboration with writer/director Alice Cox Neff.

Also an accomplished actor, Albert's film and TV roles include Gotham (FOX), Julia (HBO Max), New Amsterdam (NBC), Love Life (HBO Max), Girls (HBO), Patriots Day, 30 Rock (NBC), Law & Order SVU (NBC), Body of Proof (ABC), Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, The Makeover (ABC), and Brotherhood (Showtime). He has been cast by directors such as Spike Lee, Peter Berg, Greg Mottola, Henry Bromell, and Mark Waters to act opposite Kevin Bacon, Helen Hunt, Liev Schreiber, Julia Stiles, Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, Justin Long, Larry David, Cybill Shepherd, and Mariska Hargitay.

Tina Chen

Tina Chen is a Golden Globe®, Emmy® and Drama Desk nominee. She starred in the independent feature, Almost Perfect (dir. Bertha Bay-Sa Pan), playing opposite Kelly Hu, Roger Rees and Edison Chen. Almost Perfect was a Festival Centerpiece Presentation at the 2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. Tina starred as Mrs. Mao in the short film, The Potential Wives of Norman Mao (dir. Derek Nguyen), which has been screened at film festivals throughout the United States and was accepted at the 2011 Cannes International Film Festival's Short Film Corner. Tina's other films include The Hawaiians (dir. Tom Gries), playing opposite Charlton Heston, for which she received a Golden Globe® nomination; Alice's Restaurant (dir. Arthur Penn), opposite Arlo Guthrie; Three Days of the Condor (dir. Sydney Pollack), opposite Robert Redford; and the award-winning indie film, Face (dir. Bertha Bay-Sa Pan), opposite Bai Ling.

Tina has guest starred on numerous TV shows and was nominated for an Emmy® for her performance in the CBS Playhouse special, The Final War of Olly Winter, opposite Ivan Dixon. Besides the above mentioned performers, Tina has acted alongside actors such as Max von Sydow, Anthony Quinn, Geraldine Chaplin, Burt Reynolds, Ernest Borgnine, Wayne Rogers, Stefanie Powers, David Janssen, Kim Basinger, and David Carradine. On stage, Tina has played leading roles in many productions on and off Broadway including Empress of China, Comfort Women, The Shanghai Gesture, The Joy Luck Club, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Arthur & Leila, The Year of the Dragon, and David Henry Hwang's Family Devotions.

She has directed plays at various theaters in New York, including Pan Asian Repertory Theatre’s production of Fairy Bones starring Lucy Liu in her stage debut. Tina co-produced the Broadway production of the Peter Nichols play, Passion, starring Frank Langella, and received a Drama Desk nomination as part of the producing team of the Broadway production of The Rink, by Terrence McNally, starring Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli.

Her lecture, Legacy of My Chinese Family, is the story of three generations of her mother's family and their influential roles in the history of China.

Tina’s Christmas carol, This Tree, with lyrics by Ruth Wolff, premiered with the Hong Kong Children's Choir at its Silver Jubilee. She has just completed a Hanukkah song, Eight Nights, with lyrics by her daughter YiLing Chen-Josephson, which will have its premiere this holiday season.

In the beginning of her acting career, Tina simultaneously did research in the Serology & Genetics Lab of the New York Blood Center. She also started Food Liberation, one of the first health food stores in NYC.

Tina is a volunteer reader to the sight-impaired at the Lighthouse International. She is also on the National Council of the Aspen Music Festival and School.

Over the course of her career, Tina has received among others, the following awards: Urban Stages 25th Anniversary Award for Artistic Brilliance, Women’s Projects Women of Achievement Award, Girl Scouts Woman of Distinction Award and the Anna Mae Wong Award given by Asian Fashion Designers of LA.

"Artistic Instinct" is the core of Cira Felina Bolla’s work as Director of Photography. Fluent in four languages, Bolla’s work is award-winning and has been screened at film festivals around the world.

Bolla completed her undergraduate work at New York University (Tisch School of the Arts, Film & Television). In 2006, she received an Emmy® Nomination for her documentary camera work on Stories from the Sharp Experience; Episode 5. In 2005, Bolla’s passion for the camera resulted in a prestigious appointment with the Women in Film Cinematography Fellowship. Thereafter, she closely studied her craft in a "hands-on" environment while on the set of the Emmy®-winning House MD television series, where she trained in various aspects of cinematography with the distinguished veteran Cinematographer, Roy H. Wagner, A.S.C. (a former student of Ansel Adams).

Bolla’s formal (and informal) education, training and life experience have made her a natural at keeping pace in the demanding world of production. Her exceptional skills in the management and empowerment of crew keep her departments and schedule running smoothly, in even the most adverse of conditions.

Cira Felina Bolla is the first woman cinematographer featured on the cover of the 30-year-old industry magazine P3 Production Update (Dec. 2006). Student Filmmakers Magazine (Aug. 2007) featured an article on her Emmy® Nomination, and she is the selected cinematographer for the Women In Film (WIF) website and print ad campaign set to run in industry publications through 2010.

Ryan Leach

Ryan Leach is an American composer for film and television. His music has been heard on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and MTV.

Ryan brings more than skill and passion to his work in a competitive realm of film scoring. His masterful blending of styles and genres makes him an inventive voice in a new generation of composers. Born in the Cajun South and raised in Australia, before relocating to just outside Philadelphia, his writing reflects a diverse musical background and product of his various locales.

After graduating from Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors of Music in Film Scoring, Ryan made the move to Los Angeles. He began his LA career working for composer Michael A. Levine as assistant, music editor, and additional composer. It was with Levine that Ryan received his prime-time television debut, scoring additional music for Jerry Bruckheimer's Close To Home and Cold Case on CBS.

In the Spring of 2007 Ryan moved with Levine to Remote Control Productions, Hans Zimmer’s facility in Santa Monica. Being a part of Remote Control gave Ryan the opportunity to work with and learn from the top composers in the industry, as well as providing first hand experience on such films as Bee Movie (score by Rupert Gregson-Williams), The Simpsons Movie, and The Dark Knight (scores by Hans Zimmer).

Ryan currently works from his studio in LA, writing original music for feature-length and short films, commercials, and new media.

Aaron Howland

Aaron Howland

With his brother Seth Howland, Aaron co-founded the film production company 7 Fluid Oz. Productions LLP in 2001. Since then, he has worked on a wide range of film projects.

Aaron directed, produced, and edited On the Way, a feature-length documentary about Milwaukee singer, songwriter, and guitarist Peter Mulvey. Aaron also produced and edited the feature-length dramatic film Interrogation, written and directed by John Chase (Venice Underground) and executive produced by Jeff Most (The Crow). Aaron has also worked on comedies, acting as producer and editor of the award-winning film Jack Milton: Fairy Tale Detective. Recently, he directed and edited the critically acclaimed satire The Albino Code, which was featured on CNN, MSNBC, Inside Edition, and Entertainment Tonight and screened at numerous film festivals.

Aaron is also a co-founder and judge of The Boston Motion Picture Awards, a group of international film and screenwriting competitions founded with the expressed purpose of giving independent filmmakers a head start in getting their next projects made. Judges have included Stephen Root (Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Finding Nemo, Office Space, King of the Hill), Cirroc Lofton (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Siu Ta (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, This Is Wonderland), Toddy Walters (South Park, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut), Trace Beaulieu (Mystery Science Theater 3000, Freaks and Geeks), and Keiko Agena (Gilmore Girls, Kim Possible). Past winners have emerged from countries including Australia, Canada, and India.

Richard Possemato

Richard Possemato

Richard served as Assistant Director for Chanal Productions' first film Fate Scores and serves as Producer for Descendants of the Past, Ancestors of the Future.

Originally trained in biology, Richard obtained a Ph.D. degree from Harvard University in 2008 and is engaged in breast cancer research at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he holds a prestigious Susan G. Komen for the Cure Fellowship.


Brian D. Evans

Brian D. Evans

Associate Producer

Brian grew up in the small town of Ludlow, Massachusetts. He began his acting career several years ago making four-hour commutes to New York City to attend auditions and acting classes, where he found a passion for acting and making movies. More recently, Brian has been involved in numerous films in the Boston area. He’s starred in horror shorts such as All Hell and comedies such as Thief Jerky, part of the Best of Boston selection for the 48 Hour Film Project. Most recently Brian produced, wrote and starred in the short film Paper View.

Brian is also an extremely successful internet marketing entrepreneur. He is a highly sought after consultant who spends his time managing projects, running traffic, building lists and generating leads/sales for some of the biggest names in the business. Brian publishes the daily internet marketing blog Daily Conversions.
